The cold war - was it really that cold?

The "cold war" is considered rather "romantic" with no bloodshed. Is it true? Was any death directly caused due to the cold war?

20 thumbs up

yoavdothan,

How did you come up with the number 407,316?

I've taken a peek at the links you provided in your answer, and they don't seem to support your case. The site http://www.3ad.org/coldwar/coldwar_casualties.htm , for instance, opens with the following words:

"While the Cold War did not generally produce casualties as other wars do, many soldiers still lost their lives while serving on freedoms frontier.  Most of the casualties died in training accidents"

24 thumbs up

I think a if there were casualties they were probably secret agents which both countries wouldn't want to expose as cold war casualties. I did find an interesting document on POW's and MIA's:

http://www1.va.gov/vetdata/docs/POWCY054-12-06jsmwrFinal2.doc (page 8)

which claims there are some .

Check this too.

I agree avout the secret agents.

I wonder what caused all these MIA and POA. My guess that the majority is probably due to accidents/weather condition, etc.
