To be a coder or not to be a coder?

I am 31 years old, university graduated on business administration, average internet user: How can I be a successful coder? I am 31 years old, is it too late? How long can it take to make money?

I think that most of the really successful coders are those who started programming at a very early age and really breath, eat and drink code all the time, or people who studied computer science in the university and really know all the math behind. I think that a clever person with no background could become a good programmer, but it will take a lot of hard work, time, and probably luck. Becoming a star programmer -- I doubt it.

Still, even being a "code monkey", as some people call it, could be a good job IMO. Not that I tried it...

I'm not a coder, but I disagree. I don't think it's ever too late to learn a new profession, nr do I think that 31 is too late to learn how to be one.

I didn't know anything about HTML or web building less then a year ago,  but manage to teach myself HTML and now use dreamweaver to  make websites. My coding ability in HTML is pretty limited but I'm getting better and better. I know a lot of designers that went the same root - learning to code was a natural step after learning graphic design because so much work right now is internet based.

It's great if you can "live, breath, eat and drink" code, but even if all you eat is burgers and all you drink is coffee, a few good books and a course or two can get you on the right track. There are a lot of useful forum online, there  are a million books you can buy - just start and see if you like it or not. It's not an easy thing to learn but it's totally doable.

Thanks all. I can clearly see that it would be much better to focus on my managing skills rather than trying to do the coding myself.

After all, there are already lots of talented coders to cooperate...
