My closet smells like death! I can't get the smell to go away!

I'm in a rental apartment and my one closet has the nastiest rankest smell ever. We've tried everything including cleaning with clorox and repainting the walls but it still smells like something died in there. Candles, ceder, febreze, oust, etc all only work for a short time but the smell ALWAYS comes back.

Any suggestions on how to get rid of it? I'm at my wits end. It's not cat urine, I used to have that problem in another closet, this closet actually smells like death. It's 20 times worse than the cat pee closet. Ug... Please help!

Turn off the television and teach your children how to think.

It is either under the floor or within the walls.

I suggest you notify the landlord and request that something be done about it. Can you break your lease and find another place to live if he refuses to fix the problem?

If you cannot (or if you choose to stay), then you might ask for a deep discount in your rent. I believe you can also notify him, in writing, of the problem and request it be fixed.

If he refuses, I believe you can withhold the rent (depositing it into a separate escrow-type account) until the problem is corrected.

You might run your situation by an experienced landlord/tenant lawyer and see what s/he has to say.

Good luck!

The odor can be caused by many things. "Death" isn't an odor I'm familiar with. It's probably mice. When people use the bait paks that are sold everywhere, the mice die a slow death. Usually they end up inside walls to die and it takes a long time for the odor to subside. Without tearing out the walls and eliminating the source, the odor will not go away soon. If mice are the problem, time is the only remedy.

Oooh, now I get it..

I'm in agreement with DubsVet; it is likely a dead mouse inside the walls. In my experience it usually takes around a month or two for the smell to go away. Aside from time you could try placing a bag of open charcoal inside the closet and closing the door to help it do the job. Good luck to you!
