How do you clean calk around replacement windows

How do you clean around replacement windows where the installer gooped the calk between the new window and the wood molding?  It's particular bad on the sill of the window over the kitchen sink.  I had some drywall work done in the kitchen and have made the calk ragged trying to remove the drywall dust.  (The calk is also smeared over the molding.)  Also, I would like to paint the molding.

Ideally, I'd like to remove the calk and replace it with a neater job, but I'm afraid I'd scrape up the windows and/or the molding.

I would gently cut into the caulk with a box cutter then pull the whole strip away. Since the caulk is new, it should come off the surfaces easily. If little chunks remain, try rubbing them off with your finger or an eraser, or gently scraping them off with a razor. When you reapply the caulk (if it's silicone) tape off both sides as per the insrtructions on the caulk container. If it's not silicone then you can use your finger and/or damp cloth to make it smooth after squeezing it on.

If this is a silicon caulking there are commercial solvents that will remove the worst of it. These are available at most hardware type stores. The only other solution I know of is to use a backed razor blade and carefully scrape up the stuff.

When you go to replace the seal consider using a latex base caulking. It is relatively easy to get a neat job if you simple apply and then wipe with a fairly damp cloth
