I've never seen any problem in just putting it out, like you'd put out a cigarette, and then lighting it later.  I don't think it gets ruined easily or anything.

Leave it to burn and it will go out by itself almost immediately    .

The best way to put a cigar out is to let it go out on its own. If you crush it down to extinguish the fire, then it will release odor. If you let it go out on its own then the exterior ashes will form a natural seal around the burnt end and it will not allow the odor to be released. When you are ready to relight it, just remove the ashes from the burnt end and relight it.
