Yes. Their names generally mean that the cigar is a certain size. The most common are PRESIDENTE (Longer and thick),

CHURCHILL (long and thick), TORO (shorter and thick), ROBUSTO (short and thick), ROTHCHILD (shorter and medium width), CORONA (medium length and width), LONSDALE (long and thin), PANETELA (long and thinner), TORPEDO (long and thick with the cap coming to a point), PIRAMIDE (long and medium width and the width gets narrow and ends with a small round cap), TRIANGULO (similar to the Piramide but the cap is pointed), BELICOSO (similar to the Torpedo but shorter), PERFECTO (varies in length and width but both sides of the cigar are closed), DIADEMA (a Perfecto that is at least 8” long), and CULEBRA (three panatelas twisted around each other and must be separated before smoking).

has a basic guide on what to expect for some of the standard names but there is really no set in stone rule especially on large sizes like the Churchill.

  • Welcome to the wonderful world of cigars!  Two excellent sources for the information you are going to be seeking is Perelman's Pocket Cyclopedia of Cigars and The Complete Idiot's Guide To Cigars (read only by the truely bright person).  Purchase a small spiral bound book and as you try new brands and sizes, make simple notes.  After a very short period you will begin to recognize a trend in the cigars you enjoy the most.  My personal recommendation to beginning cigar smokers is to find the ring gauge (size of round) that you are most comfortable with.  Begin with a cigarillo and a Churchill, then work your way through the varied sizes.  When you find a comfortable ring gauge, stick to that ring gauge when trying new stogies.  Good Luck and enjoy!      Cigarfox.com
