I am looking for a few suggestions as to how a Christian mightresponds to news of death of freind, or a loved one of the friend,  when its not known if the friend, or the deceased, was a believer?

The same as anyone responds to the news of someone's death.

"I'm sorry for your loss. Please accept my condolences."

Personal religious beliefs or religious affiliations have nothing to do with it.
