AVG is what I'd recommend.  It's not free anymore (actually it is for another month), but it has a smaller footprint, now has options for anti-spyware and firewall built in and very affordable.  I can't stand McAffee for many reasons I won't go here, Norton I liked before but they have become too bloated and take way too many resources and interfere with too many programs - so they're out.  I haven't played with the other ones you mentioned but I'd recommend buying AVG's solution - it'll have all of these various protections in one package and you'll be set.

I agree, AVG is excellent, but are you sure it's going to stop being freeware? I found this article, has something changed since then?

To the original asker: Avast! is also quite good.

Yes, they will have a free version still, although strictly for anti-virus, strictly for personal (non-commercial) use, without fast updates, spyware/identity/spam protection.  Here's the link where you can get it: http://www.grisoft.com/doc/products-avg-anti-virus-free-edition/lng/us/tpl/tpl01

I used Norton as part of a package deal with my provider but cancelled this part and have the free AVG version which works ok. They also have a free anti-spyware I use.Adaware and Spybot are OK too. Ccleaner is not an anti-virus program but a crap cleaner.Paul
