I think a lot of children's television is put on for commercial benefit - they know the kids will enjoy it and they look for ideas that will have lots of merchandise to go with it.

There are some shows that are educational and fun.  My kids love Dora and it does teach them some new words but the marketing value of that show is huge.

Parents have to be really careful to select what shows there kids can and cannot watch as they cannot trust the networks to choose only suitable shows.
