With those recent developments in mind, you might qualify for govt. grants and/or "in-house" assistance from your school, as those are the "charities" for full-time students. No car can create an immediate cash flow problem of course, and lack of cash flow is what ultimately kills many budgets for millions of hard working people, so that's the problem you need to fix first. Was the medical bill for your care or someone else's? I ask because driving w/o insurance (or enough insurance) seems like a good way to save cash, but if you do get into a serious wreck with somebody else, the cash flow problem gets MUCH worse long-term.
