Transferring photo files from a computer to a cell phone is easy. There are a few ways to transfer these files, depending on the type of phone you have. For older phones, you'll normally need to do a picture mail transfer, since many don't have USB connectors, while newer phones can have photo files sent to them from a computer in a variety of ways. Picture mail can become expensive, since you're charged a fee for every file you send, while USB transfers only cost only as much as the USB data cable or USB memory card reader that you'll use for the transfers.

Email Transfer

  • Step 1
Compose an email using your personal email address and attach the photo(s) you want to transfer to the message. All email addresses allow users to attach files. When you click on "Attach" a screen will open in which you can navigate to the pictures you want to transfer. Click on an individual picture to attach it and click on "OK" to confirm the attachment.

  • Step 2
Send the message to your cell phone through the email address that was provided to you by your cellular service provider (the address at which you receive picture mail). Different cellular service providers have different methods of sending picture mail, but it's normally a configuration like this: "your cell phone number"@"your cellular service provider's website" (ex: 5555555@sprint.pcs.com). When the message is sent, your phone will ring to alert you that you have a message (picture mail). To access the message with your cell phone, full data service must be enabled in your service plan (full data service includes Internet and email, picture mail and text messaging).

  • Step 3
Use your phone to view the message you sent yourself. Select the message you sent to your phone (it will appear in your "Messages" folder) and the device will automatically attempt to log on to the Internet to access the message. If full data service is enabled, the pictures will appear.

  • Step 4
Download the photo attachments to your cell phone.

  • Step 5
Save the attachments to your cell phone's photo directory. From there you can manipulate the photos in any way your phone allows and even save them as the background on the home screen.

  • Step 1
Purchase a USB data transfer kit. The kit comes with a USB data cable and synchronization software that will modify your phone and computer so that the information on each device is accessible by both devices.

  • Step 2
Install the synchronization software to your computer and start the software.

  • Step 3
Connect the cell phone to your computer with the USB data cable and configure your cell phone to the computer using the synchronization software.

  • Step 4
Open the folder on your computer where you store your photos with the synchronization software.

  • Step 5
Select the photos you want to transfer to your cell phone and click on "OK" (the exact command will vary, depending on your computer system and the synchronization software your purchase). Once the transfer is complete, you should be able to go to the photos folder on your cell phone and view the images you transferred.

  • Step 1
Purchase a USB memory card reader that is compatible with the memory card inside your cell phone.

  • Step 2
Turn off the cell phone and remove the memory card. Insert the memory card into the reader.

  • Step 3
Insert the USB memory card reader into a USB port on the computer.

  • Step 4
Open your photos folder and then open the cell phone memory card folder.

  • Step 5
Click on the photos you want to transfer to highlight them and then drag and drop them into the memory card folder.

  • Step 6
Remove the memory card from the USB memory card reader, insert it into the cell phone, and turn the phone on. The photos should now be located in the photos folder on the cell phone.
