What causes severe pain over entire body when you ...

what causes severe pain over entire body when you first wake up? I've been having this problem for several weeks now. I'm a white 64 year old female. I have a lot of medical problems i.e. fibromyalgia, COPD, hypothyroidism, obesity, sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome. I have been diagnosed for some time but this awful pain upon awakening is fairly new. I haven't spoke to my doctor about it because these symptoms have shown up between appointments. I plan on seeing him soon for flu shots, etc. but I really need some kind of answer now. Can anyone help me?

Fibromyalgia is defined as a syndrome in which a person experiences severe chronic pain that most often affects the entire body, and debilitating fatigue. The pain is experienced in the muscles, tendons and ligaments. Patients with fibromyalgia often experience other sensations in addition to pain such as stiffness, soreness, a feeling of muscles being overused, burning and muscle spasms. Fibromyalgia cannot be cured, but it can be managed in a variety of ways. Fibromyalgia management programs focus mostly on treating and alleviating the pain...

Opioids
  • Opioids, also referred to as narcotics, are a type of medication used to alleviate severe pain. These medications are only used when other medications and treatment methods have failed to alleviate a patient's pain. The most common opioids used to treat fibromyalgia include oxycodone, hydrocodone, fentanyl and morphine. Opioids are also believed to help relieve a patient's sleep problems, depression and anxiety, and they are also said to help improve a patient's mobility and overall quality of life.
  • Antidepressant medications have shown promise in alleviating fibromyalgia pain. They also help to relieve a patient's depression and sleep disturbances. Antidepressants are most commonly used to help restore a restful sleep which can help to interrupt a patient's pain cycles. When used to treat pain these medications they are typically prescribed in much lower doses than when they are prescribed to treat depression. The types of antidepressants prescribed to treat fibromyalgia pain include tricyclic antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and serotonin norepinepherine reuptake inhibitors. Serotonin norepinepherine reuptake inhibitors are the most commonly prescribed to treat pain.
  • Since fibromyalgia affects the muscles, muscle relaxers can be greatly beneficial in alleviating a patient's pain. They help to reduce muscle spasms and relieve tense and stiff muscles. The most commonly prescribed muscle relaxers to treat fibromyalgia include cyclobenzaprine, orphenadrine citrate, carisoprodol and tizanidine.
  • Benzodiazepines are a type of drug that includes antidepressants and sedatives. They can be quite effective in relieving fibromyalgia pain as well as helping to promote sleep and alleviate anxiety and depression. The most commonly used benzodiazepines to treat fibromyalgia include temazepam, lorazepam and clonazepam.
  • Lyrica, also referred to as Pregabalin, is a drug that is commonly prescribed to alleviate fibromyalgia pain. It reduces over-stimulated nerve cell activity which help to reduce the amount of pain signals that are sent through the body. This medication may also help to improve sleep and alleviate fatigue.
  • NSAIDs are used to reduce pain by reducing inflammation. Most fibromyalgia patients find pain relief by using over-the-counter NSAIDs such as Aleve or Ibuprofen. Those who do not can often be prescribed stronger prescription NSAID's such as Celebrex or Mobic..Innocent

Fibromyalgia

1

Sleep - Sleep is essential for healing Fibromyalgia and you should aim to get at least 8 to 9 hours of sleep every night. Make your bedroom an oasis - calm and relaxing. Do not watch tv or use the computer at night before bedtime. Keep a consistent schedule and meditate or listen to soothing music before retiring to sleep.

  • Step 2
Exercise - Another crucial element to healing Fibromyalgia and feeling better is exercise. Yoga, swimming, and walking are the best forms of exercise to choose. Make sure to do some form of exercise every single day for about 20 to 30 minutes. Stretching after waking up, before and after exercise, and before going to bed can also be beneficial.

  • Step 3
Supplements - There are many different supplements that have been tried by people to help with the ailments of Fibromyalgia. Try different treatments and find what works best for you. Some popular choices are fish oil, Sam-E, garlic, and grape seed extract. You should also take a multivitamin every day. I also recommend taking 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and 1 probiotic, such as Sustenex, daily as Fibromyalgia sufferers are prone to yeast infections.

  • Step 4
Diet - Eating a healthy, balanced diet should be a part of your treatment plan. Choose organic fruits and vegetables when available, and avoid processed foods and preservatives. Follow a low carbohydrate plan and avoid anything with high fructose corn syrup, or that has hydrogenated on the list of ingredients. Avoid sugar and artificial sweeteners. Use small amounts of honey or agave instead.

  • Step 5
Happiness - Make sure to find time daily to include things in your life that bring you joy. Listen to your favorite music, or look at pictures of beautiful flowers or the ocean. Watch your fish swim in their tank or cuddle with your pets. See a doctor if you experience symptoms of depression. Antidepressants can be helpful for patients with Fibromyalgia

Just because you think something is real doesn't make it reality, so take a deep breath and reconsdier ...

Two comments:

1) You really answered your own question by listing all the maladies you suffer (I'm sorry). Several of them -- esp fibro -- include lots of pain and stiffness in the mornings. I, too, suffer from RA, fibro, and a few others just for good measure, and I know EXACTLY what you are talking about. You've got to get up and be active, Judy, but take it slow. You get no points at this stage and age for speed.

2) Masterflagger has done a tremendous job of describing fibro. While you read many articles claiming that opioids have been shown to not be that helpful for fibro, I can tell you that without them, I would lose my mind (or what's left of it). So if that is in your arsenal of medications, don't feel guilty about taking it! Just be careful you don't overdo it.

As a fellow sufferer of fibro and chronic fatigue, I know that pain. Getting up and getting moving eases most of it for me. There's never a time I'm without pain, but once I get moving it gets better.

I wish i could get vicodan. It helps a lot. And also helps to relieve many of the depression symptoms I have. But doctors these days seem to feel it's way better to be suicidal because you're in constant pain that to be possibly addicted to something that might actually relieve it.

I'm sure exercise would probably make me better, but the chronic fatigue syndrome puts a hitch in that, in that anything I do physically, I pay for. Severely.
