Asked about “My Cat Has a Cold

My cats are sick...I CANNOT afford a vet....

Is there anything I can do for my cats at home to treat their colds. I have six cats all under two years of age. They have colds and I am extremely worried. Is there anything that I can do to help them?

Hi,

Definitely do NOT give your cats any cold remedies made for humans!  Cats' bodies cannot process human painkillers, and they are poisonous to cats.  Cold remedies in any dose contain enough painkillers to harm your cats!  If your cats just have colds, they should clear up by themselves in a week or so.  You can give them some warmed chicken broth to help them along.  However, if they look as though they have difficulty breathing or have a very high temperature, you will need a vet.  Some vets will do payment plans, or they may offer you a lower rate if you are in financial need.

Seriously, YOU HAVE 6 CATS!  Why would you have all of them if you cannot afford a vet?  Their health and well-being is YOUR responsibility.  If your cats are sick, they need to see a vet.  If you cannot afford to care for them, then you need to give them to someone who will take responsibility and provide proper care for them.

When I see questions like this, it really upsets me.  People need to start stepping up and taking care of their animals.

If your child was sick, would you just stay home and not take them to a doctor?

Amanda, Your answer is inappropriate. Please learn the facts and be a little more compassionate. Many parents do not bring children to the doctor for minor illnesses such as colds.... Sadly, many parents do not vaccinate children because they can't afford it. There are answers to help the cats without bringing them to a vet all the time. Colds, like in humans have to run their course, but we can help them by wiping runny eyes and noses.... Also, there are vets out there that will offer very discounted rates for services... Cats need to be hydrated just as humans do so that's important for the cat with cold as well.

Never mind

To the vets immediately! Cats can develop Cat Flu and complications so quick action is vital.

I don't know where you are but there are animal charities in the UK such as the PDSA and Blue Cross who will examine and treat sick animals for a donation or as much as you can afford.

See the vet!

feed the cats some milk or chicken noodle soup

I've had luck treating my cat's colds with a fish- based canned food, small amounts of L-Lysine, vitamin C, and cod liver oil. I use capsules of fish oil because the human stuff is usually flavored. But if the condition does not improve or gets worse within 7 to 10 days, PLEASE take your cats to the veterinarian.

Take care of them. They just need attention.
