Do cats prefer "tasty" water?

I noticed that my cat really doesn't mind drinking his water after some food or some sand from his sandbox fell into his water bowl. Lately he started trying to drink from the toilet. I know another cat who puts her foot in the bowl when she drinks. Could it be that cats don't like the taste of pure water?

The water cats like are a sheer mystery. It's a know habit of them to drink from the toilet bowl, and often from refrigerators' drain on the back side.

Personally, one of my cats has recently started to drink running tap water, when I open it. Since then she seldom drinks from her regular water bowl. Tap water are obviously cleaner.

I agree, cats have a peculiar sense of taste. My cat will drink water from a dirty cup of coffee in the sink, but will ignore the totally clean bowl of water that I leave out for him (and change at least twice a day).

Theoretically, cats drink only fresh, preferably running water (unlike dogs who will  drink just about anything). If water has been standing for a while then cats treat it as "not fresh", and ignore it. However modern cats who live in modern homes have come into contact with a variety of different tastes and smells, and have therefore developed some very peverse drinking habits.
