I assume that you refer to the 1.6 Liter engine on both - they should be comparable in fuel consumption, even though I have seen user reviews that claim that the Elantra does only 7KM Liter, which is pretty bad.

they also had similar problems with the Hyundai Gets, which have been fixed this year, so maybe they fixed the Elantra too.

I would go for the Chevy, simply because I dont like Huyndai.

I have heard that the Elantra is more fuel efficient, but I believe they're comparable. What kind of driving will you be doing? I find Chevrolet better than Huyndai, I was looking not only on the speed and at the performance of those cars but also the model does matter to me.
