The check engine light tells you that the computer has detected an abnormal condition.  If the problem corrects itself the light will go off.  Sometimes removing the gas filler cap, cleaning off any debris and replacing the cap tightly will work.  If that does not work, pull the trouble codes to check for a system problem.  Some causes of the light being on are minor and will not require immediate attention. Other causes are more severe and should be corrected.  Fords will turn the light on if the brake anti-lock system is not working.
