According to the consumer reports survey for Nov 2007, these small cars offer the best mileage. However, I do not have the cost of each car,as that is another research effort and will be provided as soon as it is completed.

The Chevy Aveo is a fantastic car for getting good gas mileage. My husband drives one, and gets about 36 highway miles to the gallon. The list price is (or at least was) around 11,500. Hope this helps.

Concerning the chevy aveo, it's a decent mileage car, but it's certainly not a fantastic car, and despite the low price, I wouldn't recommend it. The basic rule of thumb is that smaller is usually better, and the hybrids are even better than that.

I realize you're probably looking for a new car, but, a in your price range two or three year old used car is a much better value. I recommend a 2003,2004, or 2005 Toyota Camry. They get excellent gas mileage, are extremely comfortable, handle great, and hold a lot. My 2000 with 150,000 gets as high as 36 mpg at 70 on the highway, admittedly less around town but still good, and I've only changed a cam drive belt(required maintenance at c. 70,000 mi.) at which time I changed the water pump. That's it...no other dealer maintenance. Otherwise, the Toyota/Honda's recommended are preferable IMO.

 Best of luck!
