So was my wonderful mother who raised my brother and I as a single parent.
I apologize for the attribution error. The adjectives still stand.
If the occasion ever comes up, and you want to, you might throw the following into discussions with your friends:
1. Slavery was an abhorrant blight on the history of the U.S.
2. The Northern army consisted of 2.5 to 2.75 million people-- most of whom were white -- to eradicate slavery. (Though not prejudice sadly.)
3. 370,000 of them died to eradicate slavery
4.. The following from Wikipedia:
"According to the 1860 U.S. census, nearly four million slaves were held in a total population of just over 12 million in the 15 states in which slavery was legal. Of all 1,515,605 families in the 15 slave states, 393,967 held slaves (roughly one in four),[6] amounting to 8% of all American families."
Ergo, when you meet a white person, the chances are only 1 in 12 that said person’s ancestors owned slaves, and there is a much higher probability that said person’s ancestors were in the Northern army to eradicate slavery.
This is my first time doing this type thing, and I have enjoyed the exchange.
Best regards,
