Hi,

You don't mention which Sierras you're asking about but as an avid camper up & down California, I can give you a number of good recommendations.

At the Sierra National Forest, I recommend Dinkey Creek Campground.  You can make reservations & choose the site numbers.  Nearby is Shaver Lake, a nice recreational area.  Of course, there's also the Kings Canyon/Sequoia National Parks in that area & I've camped at both places (lots of bears at Sequoia.  Here's a trip you can look at to give you an idea of the area:  Family Camping at Sequoia National Park

As for the High Sierras, my personal favorite is Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite National Park, tho I've also camped at campgrounds along the Tioga Pass Road: White Wolf, Porcupine Flat, Yosemite Creek, and down into Yosemite Valley, I've pretty much stayed at every campsite, including Curry Village with a canvas cabin.  Take a look at these trips for exploring options there (the hike to the top of Mt. Hoffman is tough, but the view from the top is simply stupendous): Family Trip to Yosemite's Tuolumne Meadows, or Hit the Trails of Yosemite National Park!

Whichever Sierras you end up visiting, you'll see some of the finest views in the US while in the midst of stunning surroundings.  Enjoy!

Camping in the Sierra Nevada California is incredible. Most of it anyway!

If you are looking at discovering & exploring the free camping spots of the Sierras, as well as the standard developed Campgrounds, then I can be as specific as the nearest highway, small town, the closest waterfall, even down to the GPS locations & forest road numbers.

I've been traveling the California back roads for 2 decades & have the online data to prove it. A good place to start is here - Cali A-Z

Here are just a few of my favorite Sierra Nevada destinations for camping:

Stanislaus Sonora Pass
