Most business follow as their core strategy the increase of market share as much as possible.

Do you think a business can survive (and thrive) if it's strategy is to just stay on the market (just keep a share of the market)?

Always know what you want.

I think they can but what's the point? Wouldn't a business want to strive to be the best?

JoeyBoy was invited by Yedda to answer this question.

@JoeyBoy : I was just curious if that is possible at all; as for the reasons - well, some businesses truly love what they are doing and seek almost perfect quality of their products. But more often than not perfect quality is not what the "mass taste" is looking for. Thus "quality vs market share" may become a survival dilemma.

market share is not the first priority, it must be the actual figures.  for example, you might achieve a grwoing market share of a market that's crashing:  100% market share of a market worth $1.00?

"Wouldn't a business want to strive to be the best?"

No.  A business wants to strive to be profitable.  Market share means nothing if you can't achieve a profit.  Many companies have strived to gain market share and have gone down the drain because they couldn't operate profitably.

The primary goal of any business is to increase the bottom line.

The only exception to all of this are start-ups which are seeking to be bought by a larger enterprise (such as YouTube or many other internet start-ups).
