Can a burger be healthy?

Is the bread the unhealthy part of a hamburger? If I eat just the burger and a salad, is it a healthy meal?

It could be a fairly healthy meal. It depends on the type of beef they or you use and its fat content. To keep it healthy use ground beef that is at least 96% lean (4% fat content).

Hamburgers can contain  about 24 grams of fat but that can be brought down based on how it is cooked.  If cooking on a flat grill or frying pan it will be sitting in its own fat and will absorb back into the burger. Be sure to use a grill were the fat will drip away from the burger. If you bake it, make sure it is sitting on a rack in the pan so again the fat can drip away from the burger.

A super lean (7% fat) 1/4 pound burger will still have 170 calories after cooking.

Be sure not to add cheese or bacon to the burger or salad, use a low fat dressing and it would be a fairly healthy meal.

Good luck and best wishes.

You can also try ostrich or  turkey  grilled (the former high in protein) burgers with tomatoes, lettuce and onions and use mustard instead of mayo:o) on a whole wheat bun. Nice with pickles too:o)

It might sound funny but I tried some pretty good veggie burgers, I am sure they are  a lot more healthier then the meat ones. Give it a try!
