About building a wooden urn

I understand the demetions on wooden urns are calculated on the weight of person at death. Ie, one square inch per one lb of body weight approximately. Is this the inside of the box or the outside of the box that is used to calculate the size? It could be a matter of a 50 percent difference depending on the thickness of the wood used for construction so becomes important. Thanks jrb
