Great question!
Before you begin..know that brushing your dog's teeth should be fun for you and pleasant for your dog. Be upbeat and take things slowly. Keep sessions short and positive. Finally, be sure to praise your dog throughout the process.
1. To get your dog used to having things put in his mouth, dip your finger in beef bouillon and let him lick the liquid off your finger. Then, rub your soaked finger gently over his gums and teeth. Repeat for a few sessions.
2. Now, wrap your finger in gauze that has been dipped in bouillon. Gently rub his teeth in a circular motion. Repeat this until your dog feels comfortable with this procedure.
3. Transition from gauze to a toothbrush, dental sponge, or pad. To do so, let your dog lick something tasty off of the brush bristles or pad so he gets used to the texture.
4. Add a specially formulated pet toothpaste to the brush. Again, let him lick some of the toothpaste off your finger to get him used to the flavor and consistency. Then, apply some to his gums.
5. Start brushing. At first, just one or both upper canine teeth. These are the easiest teeth for you to brush. Once your dog accepts having several teeth brushed, slowly increase the number of teeth you are brushing.
