You need to contact the Italian embassy to find out, however I am sure that it depends on how much time you plan on spending in Italy. If your passport expired in the time that you spend there, then clearly they will require you to apply for another passport. Good luck.

I didn't look up Italy specifically but usualy it is required to have a passport that is good for at least another 6 months to travel to European countries.
