Or how about the natives of North America that had their land taken from them by British colonials?  Many countries can claim to be victims over the last few centuries.

Expecting current citizens to pay for the sins of their distance ancestors is unreasonable.  Gaining independence is about as far as you can go.  Once you have the land back, you have to get over the past and move on, or you end up with a bitter culture that always has their hand out begging alms from their former masters.
