I was 99% sure it was "strand" in NYC with 17 miles, but apparently it's not even in the list of really really big ones.

Apparently there's a disagreement about this, and in the lead are indigo owned "world's biggest book store" and Barns & Nobles outlet in NYC.

It is probably Foyles, a London bookshop on Charing Cross Road. The size is not measured by square meters but rather by total length of its book shelves.

Apparently, in 2005, Guinness World Records had this entry:

"Largest Bookshop -- Barnes & Noble Bookstore, 105 Fifth Avenue at 18th Street.  It covers 14,330 sq m (154,250 sq ft) and has 20.7 km (12.87 miles) of shelving."  (Kundan Sen blog entry)
