Why do body parts crack?

A year or so my neck started to crack really loud. I also have a knee that cracks... why do parts of our body decide that they want to start cracking? What causes this? Does it mean something is wrong?

The joints are the ones that crack. They are not elastic, so the bones rub against each other making the cracking sound.
