Are blogs the real social networks?

Just read this post in GigaOM about wordpress blogs as the real social network. I particularly like the quote from Copyblogger that says: spending a lot of time generating content on social networks is "like remodelling the kitchen in a house you rent".

Will blogs strike back as the ultimate social networks?

Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt ...

IMO Blogs are definitely a milestone in the online world. You can use any tool as you please - I think the important aspect is not WHAT you use but HOW you use it ;-)

There is too much talk about blogs and bloggers - you're a blogger if you have something useful to say and know how to say it.

I find Social networks interesting and fun to use - their usefulness strongly depends on who you are addressing and what your message is - that's my view of things of course :)

Born. Having the time of my life. Will die.

I've also read

GigaOM post about  WordPress as the next social network and I must admit I do not agree.
There is also the concept that the e-mail client is the next social network and with that also I do not agree.
I fear that when you are a hammer, all you see are nails, everything turns into the next social network Smile.
Well, first we will have to define what is a "social network".
Lets say they are sets of relationships, a web of interconnected people/organizations, a structure made of people/organizations.
In blogs and in e-mail clients I do see the relationships but I don't see the web, interconnection and structure.
(BTW, a tool that might help is XFN)

In my opinion, blogs are not sufficiently interlinked to be a true network.  I know of numerous cliques of blogs, and they don't usually overlap.  So you do have your own little social network - people who read your blog, and you read theirs - but I don't think it's a

useful social network.  What if I need to know how to repair a broken TV set, but none of my blogging friends have experience with this?  You can use search engines like Google Blog Search or Technorati to find someone with electronics expertise, but that's not networking - that's no different from using the web as it is.
