Personally I use blog spirit for no reason aside of the fact that it's the only one who used to work on my old computer at work.
Both blogger and blogspot seem to be very popular. They all have very nice interfaces that makes writing and uploading content very easy - you sign up, choose a layout design and start typing.
You can also use them to make a photoblog, but I think for me the best option as far as photos is flickr
I think the main thing about blogging is not so much the technology, but the content and this is what you are in charge of - decide before starting a blog what kind of blog do you want it to be - a diary? a technical advice? celebrity gossip? music recommendation? Mine is sort of a diary. i used to write in it a lot and basically used it as a replacement for my therapist. I think I manage to get people to read it because I was very honest in my writing and people enjoyed following my perspective to life.
I totally didn't know what other blogs look like when i started, I just started writing whatever I felt and though, it was a very rewarding experience and though I write less those days, blogging truly transformed my life.
My advice is just start - sign up for a blogging service and just post a lot in it on a langth of time.
