Have U considered that there may be more Negative aspects than Positive??? There is a wide range to the Term "Auto Mechanics" & an Extremely Wide Knowledge Base required so that a Dealership now has to "Break Down" into "Specialties" their Mechanics & that's just to work on one "Brand/Make" of vehicle. Todays Mechanics must spend much time (not just at work, paid) in keeping abreast of todays Engineers developing vehicles. Each year there are "Service Field Schools" & "Factory Schools" they may attend. It seems each new years Models find U having to purchase New Tools. You are exposed to many Harmful Chemicals & must know how to handle & dispose of them as well according to the EPA. Many times in trying to help a customer with a Repair, U find that the "New Parts" U install are also bad having been poorly made from Factory & there's nothing U can do about it for them. If Ur honest U jeopardize Ur Job if U tell the Customer! Ur job is constantly being reviewed as Factory tries to "Make the Perfect Car" but just keeps moving farther from it! As an example, I have an '82 Chevy Blazer that gives me the same gas milage as my '03 Trailblazer, with 2/3 the weight!!! Why??? GREED is the answer & it's about to catch up with them!!! When it does, the Mechanic will take the "Hit". Then there's the Gov. mandating years ago the use of "Catalytic Converters" which now by 2010 they can no longer use because (as we know years ago) they spew out Sulphuric Acid!!! Good Mechanics are a Rare & Dying Breed as it requires a "Thought Process" using Reasoning to not just be a "Parts Swapper" as so many Today are. However, the Good Ones find an un-explainable Joy in making a good repair & learning something new each day. To graduate into the "Elite" is to find a position on a "Racing Team" working on the "Exotic Cutting Edge" of the Industry. This however is like Professional Athletics where very few H.S. or College students make it & the "Lifespan" is short. I personally ran the Engine Shop @ the University of Arizona, but my real Love is "Small Engines" as in Farm / Lawn & Garden, which has been much more Profitable for me over the years. It's also easier on ones' body! I'm Disabled now, only building "Specialty H.P. Engines" for friends & teaching them as I go. Good Luck on Ur "Project"! John
