How do I sew a small piece of cloth to another, and how to sew shirt buttons by hand. Or alternately is there a good site with pictures (not video)? I've googled this subject, and only seem to get shops.

Here is a very good web site for beginners. Debbie Colgrove Your Sewing Guide at http://sewing.about.com She had sewing 101 and quilting 101
To sew 2 pieces of cloth together simply put the right sides of the fabrics together. For quilting you would use a quarter inch seam. For a different project you might use a 5/8 inch seam. Depends on what you're sewing. Place the fabric under the sewing machine needle & sew straight down keeping the fabric straight so that your seam stays straight . Press with a hot iron to set your stictches on what you just sewed. Open up the fabric & press gently pushing the light fabric seam to the dark side. Open it up & you have sewn 2 pieces together! Good luck!
