Tim Thomas' Rough Night Leads to Improbable...

by Adam Gretz Filed under: Bruins , Penguins , NHL Videos To quote fictional hockey coach Ted Orion in D3: The Mighty Ducks (Hey, I admit it, I've watched it): "How long does it take to score a goal? Less than a second. " That's a lesson the Boston Bruins learned on Saturday night as they were 0.4 seconds away from pulling out a back-and-forth 5-4 win. Instead, a broken stick, a buzzer-beating goal and an embarrassing turnover from Tim Thomas in overtime led to a 6-5 loss in Pittsburgh. Real Salt Lake Crashes MLS Cup Party

by Brian Straus Filed under: MLS For those who think the MLS Cup playoffs are too brief, the four teams involved in this weekend's semifinals (along with Southern California Edison) did their best to draw them out as long as possible. A few hours after the Los Angeles Galaxy outlasted Houston in an epic overtime game that felt like a best-of-7 series thanks to two blackouts, Real Salt Lake eliminated the Chicago Fire on Saturday night in a sudden-death penalty shootout that followed a 0-0 tie. RSL became the third eighth seed to advance to the title game and will meet the Galaxy next Sunday in Seattle in one of the unlikeliest championship pairings in the league's 14-year history.Real Salt Lake Crashes MLS Cup Party originally appeared on Fanhouse Soccer Blog on Sat, 14 Nov 2009 23:32:00 EST . Dwyane Wade Sends the Nets to 0-10

by Brett Pollakoff Filed under: Heat , Nets , NBA Videos The Nets have had a string of injuries take away their chance to be at all relevant the first part of this season, and in fact, they were winless through nine games heading into Miami to face Dwyane Wade and the Heat on Saturday. They appeared to have a chance to get their first win of the season, though, thanks to a sluggish effort from a Miami team that was missing Jermaine O'Neal from the start, and Mario Chalmers after five minutes due to injury. New Jersey led by three with 30 seconds remaining, before Quentin Richardson accidentally banked in a three-pointer to tie the game at 78. The Nets got the lead back, thanks to a tip-in from Brook Lopez with just under four seconds remaining. But unfortunately for the Nets, Dwyane Wade plays for the Heat. And even though he hadn't made a shot the entire second half, he drained a three with 0.1 left on the game clock to make sure that New Jersey stayed winless. TCU Makes Boldest BCS Statement Yet

by Terrance Harris Filed under: TCU , Utah , BCS , Mountain West FORT WORTH, Texas -- If there were questions about the BCS worthiness of the TCU Horned Frogs , they were answered -- and resoundingly -- Saturday night. The fourth-ranked Horned Frogs made their big game against 16th-ranked Utah seem like an exhibition as they stunned the naysayers and maybe even themselves by routing the defending Mountain West champion Utes 55-28 in front a record crowd of 50,307 at Amon G. Carter Stadium. The most immediate result is that the undefeated Horned Frogs have a major leg up in the MWC race by getting past nemesis Utah in convincing fashion. Even bigger, the Horned Frogs sent a clear message to the BCS community that they deserve to be part of the BCS conversation, not just for one of the four big bowl bids but for a real shot at the national title game.TCU Makes Boldest BCS Statement Yet originally appeared on Fanhouse NCAA Football Blog on Sat, 14 Nov 2009 22:46:00 EST . Live Blog: TCU Gives Utes the Horns

by Terrance Harris Filed under: TCU , Utah , BCS , Mountain West FORT WORTH, Texas -- The atmosphere is electric and Amon G. Carter Stadium is packed to overflow capacity for what is arguably the biggest game in decades at TCU . Should the fourth-ranked Horned Frogs (9-0, 5-0) make it past No.16 Utah (8-1, 5-0) tonight they will not only have a strong edge in the Mountain West race but will also keep them in step for a BCS bowl bid and possibly a berth into the national title game. Should the Frogs, who are ranked fourth in the BCS standings, make it to Pasadena, Calif. they will become the first non-BCS conference school to compete in the BCS title game. Live Blog: Notre Dame's November Wane

by John Walters Filed under: Notre Dame , Pittsburgh , Daily Domer PITTSBURGH -- Given our location this evening, I feel a responsibility to work the term "confluence" into the text. For instance, it is an interesting confluence of events that brings Charlie Weis back to Pittsburgh for the first time since his 2005 debut as he is about to coach the most important game of his career. The Fighting Irish have tackled November with all the prowess that they have tackled anything of late, which is to say not well. The Irish are 3-7 in their last ten November contests after having won their first seven under Weis. We'll see this evening which way the proverbial arrow is pointing in terms of Notre Dame 's November nitty gritty. Key stat heading into the game? Pittsburgh leads the nation in sacks. That's bad news for a team with an immobile quarterback and a back-up who, though experienced, has yet to attempt a pass in a game this season (Evan Sharpley ). I cannot, in the words of Matt Millen, "underemphasize enough" how important it is that Clausen, who is likely more dinged up than either he or Weis is letting on, remain in the game.Live Blog: Notre Dame's November Wane originally appeared on Fanhouse NCAA Football Blog on Sat, 14 Nov 2009 21:14:00 EST . Ohio State, Pryor Win in Spite of Tressel

by Jay Mariotti Filed under: NCAA Football COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Welcome to the heartland, home of the Big Ten, a league that doesn't deserve its own TV network and should respectfully reject a Rose Bowl bid on the basis of stodginess and cowardice. Ever wonder why the best talent routinely heads southward and westward? You should have seen the final minutes of the conference's unofficial title game Saturday evening, when two prominent head coaches laid down, played for overtime and reminded us why college football in these parts is maddeningly prehistoric. There was Ohio State 's Jim Tressel , the sweater-vested genius who writes self-help books about life, unable to help himself. Armed with a two-touchdown lead with 11:32 remaining in regulation, he watched the Buckeyes allow a 99-yard kickoff return for a score and have their own interception and touchdown return nullified by an offsides call. So what did Tressel do with 2:37 left and the score tied at 24-24? He shut down all creativity, went ultra-conservative in his own end and punted. In the process, he didn't utilize the running and passing talents of Terrelle Pryor , who might be one of the dynamic weapons in the college game if Tressel wasn't stuck in the 20th century and had a clue how to develop and utilize a two-way quarterback. "BOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!'' exploded the Ohio State fans, voicing loud disapproval for the author of "The Winners Manual: For the Game of Life.'' Stanford Whips USC in Record Fashion

by Brian Grummell Filed under: Stanford , USC , Pac 10 Like a star collapsing under its own weight, USC's football program is rapidly collapsing in on itselft under coach Pete Carroll . For the second time in three weeks, USC was beaten. Badly. This time by Stanford, which walloped the Trjoans 55-21. The point total was the most ever surrendered at home by the Trojans; Pete Carroll's unbeaten November win streak went by the wayside. Of course, the points surrendered record wasn't exactly something out of the yellowing pages of history. That record was an august two weeks old. Oregon beat Carroll by 27 on Halloween, 47-20 (tripling the previous record loss, 11 points, to Notre Dame in 2001). Saturday, Stanford did the Ducks eight points better. David Haye to Defend Title Against Ruiz

by Lem Satterfield Filed under: WBA , WBC , IBF , WBO , Golden Boy Promotions , HBO LAS VEGAS -- When England's David Haye traveled to Nuremberg, Germany, for his Nov. 7 matchup with 7-foot, 316-pound, Nikolay Valuev , the 218-pounder did so with more support from his own countrymen than the man who is named "The Russian Giant" for his status as the largest champion in the history of boxing. And when Haye broke his right hand in the second round of an eventual, 12-round majority decision, it was the deafening cheers of his fans that lifted him on the way to dethroning Valuev for the WBA championship. Say Good Knight to Keenum, Houston

by Jim Henry Filed under: Houston , UCF , Heisman ORLANDO, Fla. - Good Knight, Case. Case Keenum 's late-game dramatics -- not to mention his Heisman Trophy consideration -- wilted under a brilliant Florida sun and an inspired Central Florida defense Saturday afternoon. Despite throwing two touchdowns in the closing minutes, Keenum and 13th-ranked Houston ran out of time in their 37-32 defeat to a band of merry Knights who clinched the program's first win over a nationally-ranked team. "Whether it was making mistakes or them playing really hard ... they did a good job of covering down field and putting pressure on me," said Keenum, who had led Houston to consecutive victories over Southern Miss and Tulsa last week on last-minute scoring drives. UCF Slows Keenum, Topples Houston

by FanHouse Newswire Filed under: Houston , UCF ORLANDO, Fla.(AP) -- Central Florida not only found a way to slow down Case Keenum and No. 13 Houston, the Knights didn't give the nation's most prolific passer a chance to pull off another improbable comeback. Brett Hodges outplayed the Cougars quarterback and Brynn Harvey rushed for 139 yards and three touchdowns Saturday, leading UCF to a 37-32 upset that stopped a five-game winning streak Keenum had kept alive with a pair of last-minute rallies. Harvey scored on runs of 1, 41 and 7 yards, the last set up by an interception that stopped Keenum's streak of consecutive passing attempts without a pick at 123. Hodges completed 21 of 25 passes for 241 yards and one TD. Keenum threw for two TDs in the closing minutes, cutting into a 17-point deficit. He finished 33 of 56 for 377 yards and three scores. He had more than 500 yards in each of the previous two games.UCF Slows Keenum, Topples Houston originally appeared on Fanhouse NCAA Football Blog on Sat, 14 Nov 2009 16:16:00 EST .
