How bad is my smoking?

Hey:

Quick question for all of you just out of interest. I was thinking about my drinking and smoking and wondering how adversely they've affected my health.

Overview: 19 years old.

Drinking: Started just before age seventeen, stopped mid nineteen. Drank about 1-2 times a month. Only got "wasted" i.e. blacked out 4 times. Never vomited. Don't drink at all now.

Smoking: Never smoked a cigarette-ever. About seven cigars, hookah a few times. Don't smoke now.

Just wondering how much I sacrificed my health.

I believe at your age that the activities you have described have not seriously affected your health.  I was in college in the 60s and 70s and experimented a few times with drugs and alcohol and am in great shape. I stayed mentally and physically active over the years and I eat lots of fruits veggies and mufas

The road to nowhere is paved with good intentions.

Hey James. Well, I gotta tell ya, 4 black outs can't be good!  I'm sure you've destroyed at least a few brain cells with that mess. (haven't we all)!  Since you're concerned about your health, obviously it's GREAT that you don't drink or smoke anymore!!

As you might know, our bodies are constantly healing themselves against the damage we do to ourselves, and the common pollutants we're exposed to everyday. With the right amount of sleep, proper nutrition, exercise, and staying chemical free... to give your body a fighting chance... you should have no problem building many new brain cells, and healing any slight damage you may have caused to your lungs.

Live long and prosper!!! Smile

James, It's better to develop good health habits, no smoking, no cigars and very occasional alcohol drinking, may be 2 times a month. Eat a lot of vegetables and fruits, a lot of fish and a lot less red meat.

  Live ,laugh,love,

Lets put it this way I am VERY glad you stopped drinking and smoking!! As a nurse who saw the ravages that they played on the body I can't imagine why ANYBODY wold smoke or drink but the combination is like pouring acid through your vascular, nervous and immune system on a DAILY basis...When I worked in angiography to see the result of what smoking did to the arterial and venous system something that is rarely discussed (lung and heart disease being the more popular topics) I was sickened that tobacco was still legal...Same thing with alcohol...while we spent millions fighting the war on drug we do virtually nothing about the legal drug that causes most of the accidents and disease in this country and that is alcohol!! While I saw nobody runover and dead because someone was high on marijuana I saw in 27 years in ER at least 3 car accidents with gross injuries per day due to alcohol and that was on the good days!! This does not count the rapes and murders by guns and knives while under the influence of our legal drug!! The average American raises their kids to preach about drugs while pouring alcohol down their own bodies every week...it is a shame!!

Glad you quit!! Stay sober and stay away from tobacco!! All teenagers should be shown an angiogram of a non smoker versus a smoker and add alcohol to the mix and see how much worse the results are...By the way I worked with a nurse who smoked a half a pack a day and by the age of 32 had to have all the tips of her fingers on both hands cut off from Bergers disease and vascular disease caused by Tobacco...needless to say her career was over!! I am as you can see a zealot when it comes to these subjects mainly because I and my family have some health problems that we COULD NOT avoid caused by bad genes and to see people throw good health and good genes away makes me VERY angry!!
