Is mothers milk really much better than formula? Has todays modern technology closed the gap?

Mother's milk is better than formula.
YES! Breast milk is much better. It builds up the baby's immunity, and, that's a very GOOD thing. It also brings a togetherness between you and your baby that you just don't get with a bottle. It's not always convenient but is definately worth it. Breast fed babies don't have colic and when you change that poopie diaper, it is quickly evident which is better for baby. No smell compared to the formula fed baby - you need a clothes pin for that!
