Depends on case to case, also depends on what time the baby was born, if the baby was born in the night it will have different behavious initially, would be awake in the nights and sleep in days and vice versa.

Gradually the child adopts the behavious based on surroundings.

Unfortunately it depends on the baby. I have friends whose children were sleeping through the night by 3 months, but my son is 16 months and still wakes up sometimes. Also, whenever there is something new (teeth coming in, vacation, milestone - such as learning to crawl, sit up, etc) their sleep patterns might change.

Things you can try to get them to sleep through the night:

a white noise machine/soft music to help cut any disturbances

make sure they are not too hot or cold

make sure they are in a clean diaper

make sure they are fed/not hungry

It depends on your little one. Our baby girl started sleeping through the night by 6 months. You just want to make sure to feed your little before bedtime because if they aren't full they will wake up hungry which can be in the middle of the night. We also give her a pacifier and that helps her to fall back to sleep. http://firsttimeparents101.blogspot.com

If you ask me, it usually depends on the bedtime routine. It would be advisable to train the baby to sleep as early as 6-7pm at night. Also, playing with the baby before sleeping would also help for it would tire him/her, resulting to a well sound sleep. Adding a baby sleep sack pattern that looks refreshing to the eyes can also promote sleep.
