is avril lavigne the only legitimate female artist who doesn't have to bear it all by wearing slutty outfits to be popular?
I agree with the remarks above she seems more restrained then others and a lot more modest. I do find it difficult to see innocences in this photo though:

It sure looks that way! She's a great artist that I have yet to see compromise herself in order to make money. No revealing ads/clothing, no bad publicity with drinking or doing drugs or wasteful spending. She really appears to be a wholesome well-put-together young singer.
I do think Avril is cool because she doesn't take her clothes off, but I do have to say that this last album of hers was really bad compared to the other ones. She sounds very immature and whiny, instead of more mature (since she is indeed older than she was when she made her previous albums).
Also, I have to say that there are certainly other artists that don't strip down to the core in order to get popular, just look at Kelly Clarkson or Alicia Keys. I think many artists aren't viewed as sex symbols.

I don't like her music and she comes across as really bitchy in interviews.But I do like that she doesn't perform using two band-aids and a cork as an outfit.Her newer videos show alot more skin than her old ones...maybe she's starting to feel the competition.

Umm, noo. Rhianna, carrie underwoor, jordan sparks, taylor swift, are only some of the latest female artist that dont get popular by exposing to much. They are all very popular without wearing slutty outfits, and still highly respected, and provide as a good role model to younger girls, and are a good example of singers that dont gat popular by going clubing, doing drugs, drinking, getting plastic surgery, or being at crazy parties.
Avril is showing more and more skin lately. Have you seen the video for "Girlfriend"? She's into wearing short skirts and tube tops now. And fyi: she's actually friends with Paris Hilton. They party together; look at the tabloids.
Avril's a hypocrite in many ways and talentless in many others. Anyone who thinks she doesn't show skin is wrong, and anyone who doesn't see the other talented pop starlets showcasing their talent instead of their body - like someone else said: Kelly Clarkson and Alicia Keys are two, just to start - are blind.
A woman's body is beautiful. Revealing clothing does not make a woman a slut. Her behavior and her moral value system determines her character not her clothes. A confident woman should be able to wear whatever makes her feel sexy and appealing. It's a self-esteem thing. Models on the catwalk and swimsuit models wear sexy outfits and fashion designers create revealing, sophisticated evening wear for actresses and they are not labeled "sluts". What is a slutty outfit? Whose standard determines a slutty outfit?
Ermm, im sorry, but i can think of a lot of female artists who are a LOT less slutty than avril lavigne
if we were talking a few years ago i would agree but im sorry, nowadays, shes following the crowd,which is meaningless music, and given into peer pressure mate
