I have 32 oz. of 25/1 gas/oil mix and need to thin ...

I have 32 oz. of 25/1 gas/oil mix and need to thin it out to 40/1. How much more pure gasoline do I need to add. I assume there is a formula that would tell me. The formula that I came up with says to add about 20 more ounces. I'm not sure if that is correct.

Hi Mike,
You have now 95.15% gas (and 4.85% oil) [calculated: 25 * 100/26]. That means 30.77 oz gas. In 40/1 the percentage is 97.56%. The equation is
(30.77 + X) * 100 /(32 + X) = (32 + X) * 97.56/100
X= 18 oz
If I dibn't go wrong along the way you need to add 18 oz of gas.

my calculation are similar to Orond with a slightly different result. You have 1.23 oz. of oil and 30.77 oz. of gas. 1.23 oz. = 40% of 49.2 oz. 49.2 - the 30.77 of gas you now have = 18.43 oz. of fresh gas.
