Buying a cheap car doesn't always come with negative or cost implications. It all depends on where you buy, the history of the car and the original quality. However, you have to keep your eyes wide open, know where to buy and have a bit of insider knowledge. If you don't know anything about cars, be very, very careful to buy a private car you see advertised.
There are a number of other options. One is to by at a car auction, such as a Barrett Jackson auto auction. Check the cars out before the auction. Preferably take a friend who knows something about cars, with you to give you advice. Also keep your insurance in mind. The make and model you choose can make or break your cheap insurance rate deal. Who knows, you may be very lucky and get a great deal. I know about many cheap cars that have given their owners years of fantastic, cheap service.
