There are 2 books by Tom Brokaw, "The Greatest Generation" and "The Greatest Generation Speaks. They are not small books, probably 300 pages each but are so good you could probably read them in a week or so.
They tell inspiring stories of the average Joe, the GI Joes during postwar America. Many are the people left behind to cope with things a spouse, father, brother would have to if they were there. Brocaw mirrors a reflection that may be a true legacy for many years to come.
Hope this helps.
