Too much allowance for a teenage girl?

My sister gives her teenage daughter an allowance of $50 per week. I know that times have changed since I was a teenager, but this seems a bit extravagant. Her parents pay for clothes and food so the money is really just for fun with her friends etc. How much is a good allowance to give a teenage girl?

Hi,

As far as I'm concerned allowance money should give a child some spending money but it should also be a lesson in managing your own funds. I think that 50$ a week can easily be cut down to 30 or 25 depending on where you love and what your expenses are but the point is really to give enough money that can enable some play. I don't mean playing with the money but rather using it in order to achieve goals such as saving up for something or simply using it wisely. That way a child can learn the valuable lesson of appreciating ones money.

Good luck with this issue.

I think you should ask your sister if she tried to find out how her daughter uses her allowance. If she doesn't spend it all but puts some away in savings the daughter's responsibility should not be questioned. But if as you suspect she spends it all frivolously your sister should exercise her authority as parent and drastically reduce the weekly allowance. Since your sister is supplying the money she has every right as a parent to question her daughter's spending habits.

I believe that $50 is WAY too much for a teenage girl to get for an allowance. If they are doing chores I think $20 is plenty of money for the allowance per week. You should talk to your sister and see what her daughter is spending the money on and see if you can talk her into changing the allowance rate!Tongue out
