A:

The Ambien is dangerous for a recovering alcoholic, as it is also highly addictive.  Is he going to AA?  They can help him understand what's going on, and reassure him that it will pass.  He will eventually fall asleep, after the acute withdrawal is over.  I had a friend who was inadvertently hospitalized (for a broken leg), and he, an active alcoholic, had to be sedated to almost a comatose state to prevent DT's.  It doesn't sound like your husband is that bad, but medical monitoring is essential.
