If it's not fun, you're doing it wrong.

Check your owner's manual for specific information related to your model.  In my car, the light comes on for a while when I first start it as a test of the system, then goes out.  If it stayed on all the time, I would have to suspect a problem with it.

As to how safe, I don't know.  It might be designed with a disabling feature, and that is what the light means.  You need specific information on your make and model of car.  Check the manufacturer's website for FAQ's and customer support.

well it means that the air bay system has found a fault and if you get into a collision  they will probally not deploy.

What goes around comes around

In the short run it's safe but I would get it checked out ASAP. You don't really want to get into an accident and find out that your airbags don't work.

Has it always been on? the vehicle may have previously been into an accident causing the airbags to deploy.  Airbags are fairly expensive and many used car dealerships do not replace them once they have been in an accident. they could have reset the sensors causing the light to come off for a while. You may not even have an airbag in there.

Another problem may be the wiring. If you travel down bumpy or rough terrain you can easily cause an air bag wire to become unplugged. Many vehicles have the air bag sensors below the vehicle near the suspension and rack and pinion which is a bad spot for them considering that area of the car takes a lot of hits. did you hit any curbs or big bumps lately?

check if the air bags are in fact on. you usually need the key to turn off the airbags.

It might only display the light in a shorter period of time so that won't be a problem. But if not, have your car dealer see it to be able to fix since airbag may deploy anytime which isn’t a good thing.
