First aid

In first aid, how does pressing on someone's chest make their heart start working again?

I was late for work this morning, because I got stuck in Zeno's paradox

Essentially, the heart is a pump whose purpose is to keep the blood circulating. The muscles of the heart expand and contract, pushing the blood out of the heart and drawing in new blood. When a person loses consciousness their heart may stop beating and the blood won't circulate, and this can cause great damage in areas like the brain. By pressing down on the chest in a rhythm you are forcing the heart muscles to contract and expand, and therefore to keep the blood circulating. In some cases (e.g. someone who was drowning) this forced activity of the heart can make the heart muscles start working again. I guess it is something similar to priming a pump in order to make it work

When you perform CPR, you are essentially breathing for the person.  CPR is usually just something that is used to keep a person alive until professional medical help arrives.  By breathing into the mouth, you are making sure that the person is receiving air to the brain, and by pressing on their chest, you are helping their heart to beat.  CPR will usually not save one's life.

In my day job I write about Blood Pressure Treatment and treat those who suffer from blood pressure problems. Low blood pressure is a particular interest and I'm often asked about how to lower cholesterol levels. A healthy heart is becoming a huge focus for many of us nowadays. Improving your blood pressure control and thus the health of your heart and circulation system is really important. My most recent online "adventure" is to start a facility for people to ask me my opinion and to provide high quality health information by answering medical questions online.

I also have a special interest in the problem of feeling Tired All the Time and in those who suffer from chronic fatigue or lethargy. This seems to tie in also to skin care issues or skin treatment problems and suggestions. Tiredness and fatigue can lead to major problems for many individuals in modern society and the way that this can affect all areas of general health can be quite invasive in terms of daily life and coping skills.

My work with footballers and athletes leads to a focus on Painful Shoulder conditions and on the problems associated with frozen shoulder or whiplash injuryRotator cuff injury causes problems for many of my patients.

When not working I daydream about my next amazing european vacation trip  My favorite European cities include Paris and Barcelona and my next blog project will be to write about the best way to spend a night in Paris and how to find an apartment in Barcelona. I just love European travel in all its forms.

Chest compressions (part of CPR) are intended to keep the blood moving around the body. Mouth to mouth is intended to keep air going into the lungs.

If someones heart has stopped beating in a cardiac arrest then it's rare that a thump on the chest or chest compressions will make it start again. They mostly need treated with an electric shock defibrillator device.

The chest compressions that you do in first aid are really just buying time until a defibrillator arrives - and this is why you should never stop until professional help turns up on the scene.
