I was volunteering at a hospital Monday and Wednesday mornings.  The first department I volunteered in was the speech and hearing department.  But that was not for me all it was was filing.  So I spoke to Denise (the head of the volunteer department) and told her that I want to go into another department where I can use my computer skills.  So Denise said we could use someone to do that here in this department.  So I said ok thinking that I would sit at my own desk doing computer work. 
 
So I started in that department two weeks ago on a Wednesday doing computer work.  However, right after that Wednesday Denise said "So you wont get bored on Monday you will sit at the reception area for our department and on Wednesday computer work" So I said 'fine"  Did that last week and then today I sat at reception.  But today was the last straw with this department as well.  Monday's sitting at reception doing nothing but sitting is boring and Wednesday mostly sitting doing very little computer work.  If I was getting paid that is one thing but this is volunteering which means it is on my time.
 
Denise was out today and I told her secretary I need a different department to work in where I am busier and utilizing my skills.  So the secretary agreed with me and told me to speak to Denise.
 
When I came hone I called Denise and left a message on her voice mail telling her that I want another department to volunteer in  - one that is in the main part of the hospital with more people in the department and I wanted no reception work and more administrative assistant (which is my background) type work.  And that I will not be coming into the Volunteer Department to work in that department, that she must get me into another department.  I was firm but nice.
 
I am not wasting my time sitting at a reception desk doing nothing especially when I am not getting paid to do it. So if they dont have another department to volunteer in I will just look for a place where I can volunteer utilizing my skills and enjoying it in the process.
 
Plus the fact when I was using the computer in the Volunteer Department I was sitting at Denise's desk and she kept hovering over me and it was uncomfortable.

Voterperson,

   I agree with you, since you don't get paid for your volunteer work, you should be able to work where you could use your skills  and where you feel comfortable.

Well, there are two sides of this as I see it.

If you are volunteering to make yourself feel good about yourself by the reasonable use of your skills, then I am in complete agreement with you.

If one is volunteering because an organization is in need of man power and one wants to help this organization, then one would be expected to serve in the place that has the most need.

I do not have any advice for you other than to suggest that you examine your motives. I do not disagree with either stance that I presented here.

 I want to use my time and abilites to make a Positive difference in the lives of those I can reach.

 I have been a volunteer for almost 50 years - I was able to contribute where I felt I had purpose.  If you don't feel any satisfaction in where you are giving of yourself, then I believe you should choose another place or situation where you can be a "joyful" giver = it will be better for you and for the recipients of your efforts.
