Here are the things Stacy’s mother said to make a long story short:
(1)There are clothes that I have in my closet I like better than others
(2) I like the sweater from the 99 cent store but I don’t love it, even if I bought somewhere else
(3)The sweater from the 99 cent store is very nice that I bought but I am sure that it would only cost about $20 in the stores.
(4)Stacy you have a wide range you bought at the 99 cent store: any where from $20 to $100
(5)I mean some are better quality than others. The one you wore to Angela’s and Rays party I love and there a few I wanted to grab out of your hands.
(6)The two blouses you bought me I loved. The other two you bought me I am giving away because I think someone else wore that and I don’t want to wear what someone else bought.” (She said this because the inside ticket was not on the blouses)
(7)How come you like the raincoat you just bought and not the other one you saw - better quality.
(8)The clothes you bought at the 99 cent store some are nicer than others.
(9)The jewelry you bought at the 99 cent are gorgeous costume jewelry but can you compare it to diamonds
The reason I am asking about above is because of the conversation below:
Mom: “As you know tomorrow I am going to visit Fran, but do you remember what I wore the last time I went to visit her”
Stacy: “You wore the cashmere sweater”
Mom: “I did”
Stacy: “Yes you did. Why don’t you wear the sweater you bought at the 99 cent store”
Mom: “I don’t like it. Can you compare it to the Ralph Lauren or the Vera Wang sweaters.” (Her mother bought the sweaters at Lord & Taylors & Kohl’s)
This got Stacy upset because she thought her mother was putting down the clothes Stacy bought at the 99 cent store which are gorgeous.
Stacy: “Are you saying you don’t like your sweater because you bought it at the 99 cent store”
Here is the response Stacy’s friend Meg gave when she called Meg and asked Meg what Meg thought about Stacy’s moms remarks (1 thru 9 above). Do you agree/concur with what Meg told Stacy? (Meg is not her real name, I am just protecting her identity in case she doesn’t want her real name revealed)
(1. That doesn't seem insulting because I think anyone could agree that there are some clothes in their closet that they prefer over others. I know I have a preference for some things over others.
2. Definitely not! If you don't like the way something likes, then you don't like it. There's nothing insulting about that.
3. She's just being honest and it's probably true. If you bought a sweater at the 99cents store then it probably will cost that much in a regular store. I know I have some beautiful clothes that cost me almost nothing.
4. No, that sounds like a compliment. Heh on a personal note you must have great taste in picking out clothes at the 99 store if your mother really feels that way.
5. This is a compliment in my opinion.
6. This is the first thing I find really insulting. You bought her those clothes and it's very rude for her to return those clothes for a reason like that. So yes I would view this as an insult.
7. No this isn't really an insult. But then again, it depends on why you are buying a raincoat. I know if I was buying one... especially a raincoat... quality would matter for it's protection. If you are looking for something in terms of "cuteness" then no, it doesn't matter. So I wouldn't view it as an insult because raincoats should have good quality to give you protection from the weather.
8. This is clearly a compliment.
9. This is not an insult but more of an opinion. i'm not really a diamond person but most people would rather have the real thing either way and most people would feel that anything fake no matter where you buy it, is comparable to real diamonds. So I don't think this is an insult but more of her opinion.
