Are affairs at work a bad idea?

I am interested in a guy who I work with. I am a hostess in a restaurant and he bartends. He is constantly dropping hints and winking at me from behind the bar. I know that bartenders are known to be very flirty so am unsure if I should make a move. I also don't want to get into an affair at work and then regret it in case it gets awkward later. I have a friend who works in an office and began a work affair with one of her co-workers and later regretted it once people began to find out. Should I go for it, ignore it, or let him make the first move?

Having a romantic affair in the office has advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages:

  • Having office romance is a time and money saving idea. Because you no longer have to go to somewhere else and spend money if you want to look for a prospective date or a relationship partner later on.
  • Romances in the office would probably bring about a harmonious relationship among employees. Having your apple of the eye see you everyday and likewise could be an added factor to motivate employees to work harder. This could be a gain for the company as well.

Disadvantages:

  • Some companies have implemented policies about relationships in the office. If office romance is not allowed, then you will end up losing your job in favor of keeping a relationship with a co-employee. There have been cases like these and basically it is up to your decision if you want to suffer the consequences for keeping romance in the office. You can keep a secret romance but since you are just within the same environment there are great chances that your secret will be revealed later on.
  • Harmonious romance in the office is good but sometimes this can be bad especially if you allow your fights to cause inefficiency in the workplace. Since you are seeing the person that you are quarrelling with, you will be more affected and inability to function properly is expected.
  • You might end up getting jealous when you see your partner getting close to somebody else even if it does not mean anything at all. This is the most common conflict about office romances.
