Are affairs at work a bad idea?

I am interested in a guy who I work with. I am a hostess in a restaurant and he bartends. He is constantly dropping hints and winking at me from behind the bar. I know that bartenders are known to be very flirty so am unsure if I should make a move. I also don't want to get into an affair at work and then regret it in case it gets awkward later. I have a friend who works in an office and began a work affair with one of her co-workers and later regretted it once people began to find out. Should I go for it, ignore it, or let him make the first move?

Not an easy question.  On one hand he could be "The one and only" and you shouldn't lose that opportunity.  On the other hand it has the implications you mentioned.  If you really think he might be the one for you have a short discussion with him: Tell him that you don't want to mix private affairs with work..... and hint him that privately you can get on...... but at work you should remain "total strangers"..... I don't mean you'll have to hide your relations !.....  you simply separate your private life from work....

I think you answered your own question with all of the "what if's".  Does the cost out weigh the benefits?   I don't think so in this case.  Of course it is always fun to flirt, so by all means flirt back!!! Just keep things clear in the back of your mind while you flirt.

Yes they are a bad idea. If things don't work out, one or the other of you will surely being changing jobs.

I think you should go for it.Being a bartendar there will of course be women flirting with him,and if you're confidant enough to deal with that I don't see whats holding you back.I agree with the others who say your relationship should remain platonic during work hours.Sometimes bored co-workers try to create drama,and you don't want your new romance to become a target.Good luck!

Someone already said that business and pleasure don't mix . I think it's not worth it especially if something won't go his way it might translate into harassment , more and more people are aware of this especially in work places. Although you might not be in a power position and being a lady doesn't prevent it from declining to something bad. Don't mix your income with a relationship.

I am in that situation now and we broke up. It is really painful to have to see this person everyday and it makes moving on very tough. I have never told anyone in our office we where dating and neither has he but it is sometimes obvious and it has been confusing and awkward for our coworkers who wonder what is going on. It is your call- just ask yourself if you can deal with the aftermath if it does not work out. I thought I could and so far- it kind of sucks. Good luck and hope it works out for you!
