An educational program brought to you by the American Academy of Dermatology.

The following is just a brief statement of what they have to say:

With so many factors affecting clearance and a multitude of treatment options available (some only by prescription), a dermatologist’s help can make a difference. Before prescribing treatment, dermatologists consider several factors, including the severity of the acne, types of lesions present, co-existing conditions, as well as the patient’s age, skin type, lifestyle and motivation.

The knowledge gained from considering these factors allows dermatologists to create effective individualized therapy that will resolve the patient’s acne over time and prevent new lesions from forming.

Sometimes a dermatologist may combine two or more treatment options. A patient may be instructed to use one medication in the morning and the other at night. Or, two medications may be combined in one prescription medication. Due to possible side effects, over-the-counter medications should not be combined unless directed by a dermatologist or other medical practitioner.

Acne responds especially well to early treatment. Dermatologists recommend that acne be treated early to maximize effectiveness as well as help prevent scarring.

Good luck, best wishes to you and your daughter.

Well, first explain to her that this is not her fault.  Many people still erroneously believe that acne developed during puberty, even severe cases are somehow the result of poor eating habits.  Eating chocolate mint ice cream does not cause pimples.  Overuse of makeup or not washing one's face can lead to build up of pores, which most people with acne don't do.   Usually it is part of the growth spurt of the body, producing more sweat.

As well, she is in good company.  Many famous individuals had severe acne and have been succesful in life.  For instance, Bryan Adams the musician, Jon Bon Jovi, etc.  If she feels that she is going to be teased about it, let her know in no uncertain terms that anyone doing this to her are idiots.

First, she should see a doctor and a dermatologist if possible.  They will be able to determine if it is due to dry skin or oil secretion.  So stand tall.

The next is, do not pick or rub them out of frustration or as a nervous habit.  Rubbing will only irritate the skin further, which can prolong the outbreak.  Picking them will also irritate the skin, potentially leave marks, and if not ruptured and cleaned properly, will develop into cysts that will need to be lanced by a doctor for drainage.

At home treatment can include mild to severe face cleansers specific to acne.  Careful not to dry the skin.  There is also a small tool that dermatologists use to remove black heads and acne.  It looks like a large needle, only with two needle hoops on each end.  If anyone is tempted to rupture their pimples, please use this tool.

The dermatologist will be able to see if a topical cleanser is best.  There are also antibiotics that can reduce the production of oil by the skin, there are hormone treatments, and other solutions they can give you.

Always look your best because you never know who you're going to meet.

If the acne is bad enough and you are willing invest some money in clearing it up without oral medications, she can try a combination of Smoothbean Laser Therapy and Photodynamic Therapy. You can read more about the treatment here.

Owner of Acne Skin Guide, an acne treatment and acne product guide, offering real, factual articles about acne.

Hello. Can you tell us more about your daughter - is she teen or pre-teen? How long has she been experiencing acne for?

Acne is almost always invariably connected with hormonal acne - most notably a hormone called DHT (Dihydrotestosterone). This particular hormone stimulates the sebaceous glands in the hair follicle, which in turn secrete excess oil. This oil fills the pore, and attracts dirt, debris and dead skin cells and then becomes infected.

Dr. Alex Khadavi - Dermatologist from www.clearogen.com - can provide you much more insight into this practice, he is well known in the Dermatology field - most notable around his creation of an anti-DHT 3 step program.

Hope this helps
