Mike, liam is right, as long as you make them good ASAP, you will still have to pay the insufficient funds fee, but as long as they haven't been turned over to the county attorney, you'll be fine.

However, my question is, why do you keep writing checks you know you don't have the funds to cover? And don't you have a savings/checking account with overdraft insurance? I would suggest if this is happening frequently you set something up through your bank to prevent overdraft checks in the future and save yourself a fortune in overdraft fees. I can't imagine that you haven't learned something from your past experience with this problem.

What about services offering criminal background checks for ~$60? Do they get police-level info or just public records? If they do get police-level info how is that possible?

If you're going to the trouble of doing absolutely free criminal background checks, you'll want to know if they've ever been convicted of a criminal offense, not minor traffic stuff, but any violent offences or ones involving theft .

If you have not been convicted of a felony then you will pass a criminal background check. Alot of counties have judicial records online. Check to see if that county has the records online, type in your name and see what it pulls up before running a fee based check if you are still concerned.

There is no nationwide criminal background check available to the public. Several multi state checks that have data from various states, A true background check should identify the residential history of the individual and check with every county and city based on the individual. The county does not sell that data to any company, You should see a jurisdiction coverage list from whatever database vendor you use - make sure that it includes the areas you are looking for.
