Zoloft and weight issues.

I have been on 100 MG of Zoloft for going on 8 years.  It was an excellent antidote to severe anxiety and beginning serious depression, after dealing with continuous extreme crisis' with my daughter over a 15 year period.  During this time I have gained 30 lbs mostly in the ab area.  I have seen and read the many reports that say SSRI's cause weight gain, inflammation, organ inefficiency and on and on.  I have tried to taper just 25 mg every other day several times only to start to experience physical anxiety and oversensitivity within a week.   I have heard Wellbutrin is less likely to add weight or inhibit sex, but not good for anxiety.  I also read about alleged programs that work by substituting fish oil, CLA and vit E.   I am going back to following WW and I do exercise almost daily.....fast walking or spinning.  ( I did used to overexercise until I had a leaky heart valve so had to become more moderate.....also caused weight gain.)    Do you believe it is possible to lose while still on Zoloft?  To a degree I think the beliefs about this may be partly that many women are menopausal when starting these meds, and feel more relaxed and less disciplined.  Or maybe I am wrong and it really is what is making me fat.(ter).  Please give me informed ideas.  Thank you.

The best thing to do would be to talk to whoever prescribed the Zoloft.  There are other meds that can be prescribed for your situation.  Taking an honest look at your diet and excercise schedule can also give you clues about your weight issue.  Premenopausal and menopausal women do have to make adjustments to their eating and excercise habits if they want to stay slender.  As we age, our metabolism naturally declines if we do not do anything to counteract this trend. Its human nature to want to stay with what works. There is nothing wrong though with, under your Doctor's supervision, trying other alternative meds to see if they can meet more of your needs.

To be honest I didn't find Zoloft to help with anything. depression or anxiety. I was on 200 miligrams a day.  My Mother was taking Wellbutrin and she would still call me crying just about everyday.  My point is I'm off Zoloft and she (Mom)has quit hers too.  I am better now simply because my stress level and hormone level has eased off a bit. (Well not really I still have a 21 yr old daughter that calls everyday with her everyday crisis. She called me Sunday morning mad at me because I forgot to tell her to turn her clock back an hour) I have been gaining some weight around my middle but not much since I have been exercising using that part of my body. And using an exercise that is easy since I have had back surgery and it has really helped.  Cortisol levels plays a big part in that gain in the middle weight. My exercise is the bicycle. It helps the best and doesn't hurt my back and really isn't hard. It's one of the top ten.  Try it! here it is http://exercise.about.com/od/abs/ss/abexercises.htm
